The Magic of Transparent Watercolours
There’s something utterly enchanting about painting with transparent watercolours. The way the pigments interact with light and the paper creates a vibrancy that feels almost alive. I share with you in this post examples of how a single layer of transparent yellow changes a colour on your palette.

What amazes me every time is how the colours transform right before my eyes. A single brushstroke can bloom into something extraordinary, blending and shifting as it dries. And then there’s the second surprise—coming back to the painting the next day. That initial vibrancy softens ever so slightly, and the layers reveal subtleties you didn’t notice before.

Certain colours seem to have minds of their own. Transparent pigments like Quinacridone Gold, Cobalt Blue, or Permanent Rose seem to shimmer and glow, even in the lightest washes. They interact with one another, layering effortlessly, creating depth and complexity without muddying the piece.

It’s this element of surprise that keeps me coming back to my paints. There’s trust in the process and my materials—knowing that even if it feels unpredictable in the moment, the transformation will always bring wonderment.

Watercolour teaches patience, trust, and the art of letting go. It’s a little dance between control and surrender, and that’s where the magic happens.

Transparent yellow is a powerhouse in watercolour! Why? because of its warm, sunny glow and sheer quality. When used as a glaze over dried layers of paint, it creates a lukewarm vibrancy, bringing depth, richness, and luminosity to your work. It’s a perfect example of how watercolours are alive, constantly interacting with light and with each other.

Today, I’m sharing how a single layer of transparent yellow can transform nine of my favourite colours, and also itself — Transparent Orange, Winsor Red Deep, Cobalt Blue, Cobalt Turquoise, Quinacridone Magenta, Winsor Violet, Alizarin Crimson, Quinacridone Gold and Olive Green — transforming them into beautifully vibrant and glowing layered hues.

Watercolour is a medium full of surprises, and one of its most magical qualities is its transparency. By layering colours, you can create glowing effects, luminous tones, and a vibrancy that’s impossible to achieve with just a single layer. One colour that works absolute magic when glazed over others is transparent yellow.

A Word About Layering

When working with glazes, less is often more. A single layer of transparent yellow can bring out the best in your colours, but overdoing it can muddy the vibrancy. As a personal recommendation, I suggest keeping to no more than three layers - at a push, four - to preserve the clarity and luminosity that makes watercolour so special.

Mastering the Wet-on-Dry Technique
• Step 1: Apply your base colour and let it dry completely.
• Step 2: Load your brush with a diluted transparent paint and gently glaze (paint) over the dried layer.
• Step 3: Build layers gradually, observing how each colour interacts with the ones beneath.

Why Transparent Yellow Works

Transparent yellow’s sheer quality allows the underlying colours to show through, creating a glowing effect that feels almost alive. It’s particularly effective when glazed over cooler tones (like blues and greens) because it warms them up and gives them that elusive pop.

Final Thoughts

Transparent watercolours teach us to trust the process, to embrace curiosity, and to marvel at the unexpected beauty they create. Watercolour also teaches us patience, trust, and the art of letting go. It’s a little dance between control and surrender, and that’s where the magic happens. So, keep layering, keep experimenting, and let your creativity flow!

Experiment with it over different colours and see how it transforms your own palette with your favourite colours. And remember — keep your layers light and purposeful, don’t overdo it.

Glazing with transparent yellow is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to breathe life into your art, and to create luminous, eye-catching colours in your watercolour paintings. Whether you’re warming up a moody crimson, brightening a soft blue, or making your greens glow, transparent yellow brings a unique vibrancy and life to your work.

Watercolour teaches patience, trust, and the art of letting go.
As watercolour artists, we all start somewhere—often with affordable, student-grade materials. These tools are excellent for practising techniques and understanding the unique medium of watercolour. I used student-grade materials for a couple of decades before I could afford to start spending a bit more money on my materials. But at some point in your artistic journey, you’ll wonder: What’s the real difference between student-grade and professional-grade supplies?

The answer lies in how these materials are designed. Professional watercolour paints and 100% cotton papers were essentially made to work in harmony. Together, they create stunning results that student-grade materials simply can’t replicate. Here’s why upgrading your tools can transform your experience and elevate your art.

The Magic of Professional-Grade Materials

When you begin using 100% cotton watercolour paper and professional-grade paints, you’ll notice an immediate difference. Professional paints, with their higher pigment concentration and superior binders, interact beautifully with the absorbency and texture of 100% cotton watercolour paper. Colours flow and layer effortlessly, giving you vibrant, luminous results.

In contrast, student-grade materials have their limitations. While they’re perfect for beginners, they do lack the same level of performance, making them better suited for practice (I use student-grade materials for all my practice paintings!) rather than creating finished artwork.

Pros and Cons of Student-Grade Materials

Pros:
• Affordable, making them accessible for beginners.
• Great for practising techniques and exploring ideas.
• Widely available and often sold in convenient starter kits.

Cons:

•Lower pigment concentration leads to duller colours.
• Paper quality (often wood pulp-based) doesn’t absorb water evenly, leading to warping and weaker washes.
• Limited capacity for layering and blending.

Pros and Cons of Professional-Grade Materials

Pros:
• High pigment concentration ensures rich, vibrant colours.
• 100% cotton paper absorbs water evenly, preventing warping and supporting smooth washes.
• Superior performance for glazing, blending, and creating texture.
• Longevity: Professional materials are designed to stand the test of time, ensuring your artwork remains vibrant for years.

Cons:
• More expensive upfront, though the investment pays off in the long run.
• Requires careful use and storage to make the most of their qualities.

The Transition to Professional Supplies

When you feel ready to upgrade, start with one or two professional items. For example, try 100% cotton paper like Langton Prestige and a small set of Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolours. Pairing these will allow you to experience how they were designed to work together. You’ll see how the paint glides, pools, and blends on the surface, creating effects you might never have thought possible.

Final Thoughts

Upgrading to professional-grade materials isn’t just about buying “better” supplies—it’s about unlocking your creativity in ways that make the medium sing. While student-grade materials are absolutely wonderful for learning and practice, stepping up to professional tools allows you to truly experience the magic of watercolour.

"Vintage English Daffodils" is a delicate and charming watercolour painting that captures the ephemeral beauty of springtime. The artist employs a loose, impressionistic style, allowing the soft washes of colour to blend and flow, creating a sense of gentle movement and light. The focal point is a cluster of daffodils, depicted with a warm palette of sunny yellows and rich, burnt orange centres.

The petals are rendered with subtle variations in tone, suggesting a velvety texture and the play of sunlight. Thin, green stems reach upwards, adding a touch of natural elegance. The background is a soft, muted grey, which serves to highlight the vibrancy of the flowers without overwhelming the composition. The overall effect is one of quiet nostalgia, reminiscent of vintage botanical illustrations and the simple pleasures of an English spring garden.

Why Buy, Save, or Pin It?

Inspiration: This painting exudes a sense of tranquillity and natural beauty, making it a perfect source of inspiration for artists, designers, and anyone seeking a moment of calm. The loose, flowing technique could inspire watercolour artists to experiment with similar styles.

Reminder of Springtime: The image is a visual celebration of spring, capturing the essence of daffodils in bloom. For those who love the season or yearn for its arrival, this painting serves as a constant reminder of renewal, hope, and the joy of nature's awakening.

Aesthetic Appeal: The vintage, slightly faded quality of the artwork gives it a timeless charm. It would complement a variety of interior design styles, from traditional and cottage core to shabby chic and even minimalist spaces seeking a touch of warmth and organic detail.

Emotional Connection: For some, the painting might evoke memories of childhood gardens, walks in the countryside, or the simple act of picking daffodils. It could serve as a sentimental piece, connecting the viewer to cherished moments and feelings.

Gift Potential: This watercolour would make a thoughtful and unique gift for flower lovers, art enthusiasts, or anyone who appreciates the beauty of handmade art. It conveys a sense of care and personal touch that mass-produced prints often lack.

In essence, "Vintage English Daffodils" is more than just a painting; it's a window into a moment of natural beauty, a source of inspiration, and a reminder of the simple joys that spring brings. It's a piece that invites you to pause, breathe, and appreciate the delicate artistry of nature captured in watercolour.

Every artist, whether a seasoned professional or a weekend dabbler, knows the struggle of finding the right headspace for creativity. Inspiration can be fleeting, and distractions are always lurking. That's why I believe a dedicated art space, however small, is essential. It's more than just a room; it's a sanctuary for your soul.

My own creative haven has recently been refreshed, and the transformation has been remarkable. The walls are now a tranquil olive green, a colour that immediately soothes and inspires. Stepping into the room feels like entering a different world, a peaceful retreat where creativity can flow freely. This dedicated space isn't just for painting; it's a multi-functional hub where I can manage the business side of my art, work on personal projects like renovating a vintage dollhouse for my granddaughter and even share precious moments with my husband.

The importance of this dedicated space goes beyond mere practicality. It's about creating an atmosphere that nurtures creativity. The south-facing light floods the room with warmth, even in the depths of winter, making it an inviting space to spend time. The aroma of freshly brewed tea and the occasional sweet treat further enhance the sensory experience, making it a place I genuinely enjoy being. Even on the darkest of late Autumn through to late Winter days, my daylight ceiling lamp ensures that my work is bathed in bright, inspiring 'day' light.

But more than the physical elements, it's the feeling of the space that truly matters. It’s a place where I can escape the everyday, where I can lose myself in the process of creation. It’s a space that reflects my personality, my passions, and my connection to the people I love. Sharing the studio with my husband, who has his own office area within the same space, adds another layer of meaning. It's a place where we can connect, share ideas, and simply enjoy each other's company while pursuing our individual passions.

Creating your own dedicated art space doesn't require a grand budget or a huge room. It can be a corner of your bedroom, a spare wall where you can fit a small art table, a small studio in the garden (I would love that!), or even a repurposed cupboard with new lighting, desk and chair. The key is to make it your own. Fill it with things that inspire you, whether it's your favourite art supplies, cherished photographs, or simply a comfortable chair. Make it a place where you feel comfortable, inspired, and free to create.

Investing in a dedicated art space is an investment in your creativity, your well-being, and your happiness. It's a place where you can nurture your artistic spirit, explore your passions, and create something truly beautiful. So, take the time to create your own creative corner. You won't regret it.

I cannot even remember the reason why I decided to do some town and cityscape art, let alone in pen and watercolour wash. It might have been my desire to start drawing more, instead of limiting myself to watercolour floral art.

Explore the captivating world of Sheffield in South Yorkshire through a nostalgic pen and wash illustration.

These artworks highlight the historical landmarks that define the region that I know so well. My husband was born and bred in Sheffield and so were two of our children.

I hope to offer viewers and buyers a unique artistic perspective that brings Sheffield's rich heritage to life. It provides a glimpse into the past while celebrating the vibrant culture of the area.

This detailed illustration fosters a deeper appreciation for the connections between art and history in Sheffield, making it a compelling piece for both residents and visitors alike.

Great gift for those living abroad to remind them of a city they once knew and were connected to in some other personal way.

Overall, this type of art illustration has given me much joy to research carefully and thoroughly the places I wanted to include in each artwork. I will continue to paint these townscapes and cityscapes and welcome any specific commissions.

Here are several ideas and reasons to buy a landscape illustration painting of iconic locations in the City of Sheffield, Yorkshire, England -

Nostalgia and Connection: For Sheffield residents or former residents: Owning a piece of art that depicts a familiar landmark can evoke feelings of nostalgia and connection to their hometown. It can be a reminder of happy memories or a special place that holds significance.
For those with a Yorkshire connection: Even if they haven't been to the city of Sheffield specifically, someone with a connection to Yorkshire might appreciate a piece that captures the essence of the region.
Unique Conversation Starter: A landscape illustration of a Sheffield landmark can be a conversation starter in your home. It might spark discussions about the city, its history, or even personal experiences the viewer has had there.
A Piece of Sheffield History: Depending on the location depicted, the illustration could represent a historical landmark or area of Sheffield. Owning such a piece allows you to connect with the city's past and appreciate its evolution.
A Special Gift: For someone who loves Sheffield or Yorkshire, a landscape illustration can be a thoughtful and unique gift. It's a more personal choice than a mass-produced souvenir and shows you put extra thought into finding something special.

From being a toddler, growing up in the early 1970's, I was very often found bundled up in layers of mis-matched clothing, hardly feeling the chill in the air in the vegetable garden.

Exploration, where my parents’ garden was my playground and nature my endless source of exciting wonder. Always my favourite place to be, outside, up close and personal to all that nature could bring to my small world in the town of Ashford, Kent, in the UK.

Surrounded by nature's inhabitants from cabbage butterflies, slugs and snails, to worms and centipedes, I found 'companionship' in the most unlikely of places! It was in those fully-absorbed and carefree moments that the worms in particular became my curious playmates! Their squirming bodies offering both amusement and, horrifyingly, a fleeting culinary curiosity!

Another passion was the compost heap. There was always something flying around it, visiting and feeding from it.

My grandparents had a huge, open one that they let me forage in whenever I visited, but under close supervision! It was my treasure trove of broken eggshells, cabbage stalks, carrot and potato peelings.

Their second, smaller compost heap lay beneath a heavy layer of old carpet or rugs, inviting more exploration. It was warm and alive with 'my' tame families of sparrows and robins who regularly joined me on my dig for treasure!

It always felt like another world, where my grandad and sometimes my grandma would be busying themselves close by, digging, planting, pruning, collecting and whistling away. They'd tell me all kinds of ditties and stories about life in their modest sized garden, and how they grew all their own veggies and some fruits, and how there was an Anderson Shelter under grandad's potting shed!

When I couldn't play outside, I would copy, draw, sketch and colour in from books, magazines and comics. When I visited my grandma there was always a brand new colouring book that she'd bought from Leeds Kirkgate Market, on the arm of the small sofa in front of the welcoming open fireplace, for us to colouring in together.

When in 1976 I was bought my brand new set of Usborne 'Nature Trail' books, I was really happy! They were filled with ALL THINGS NATURE! I still have those books on my studio bookshelf today, and I still refer to them!

Where has the time flown?

In a world filled with constant distractions and noise, finding inspiration can sometimes feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. But as artists, we know that inspiration is all around us, waiting to be discovered in the most unlikely of places. The key lies in learning to observe the world with fresh eyes and an open mind, allowing ourselves to be inspired by the beauty and wonder of everyday life.

One of the most valuable skills an artist can possess is the ability to observe—to truly see the world around us in all its complexity and nuance. Whether it's the play of light and shadow on a city street, the delicate intricacies of a flower in bloom, or the subtle expressions on a stranger's face, there is beauty to be found in every moment if we only take the time to look.

But observation goes beyond simply seeing—it's about engaging all of our senses and immersing ourselves fully in the present moment. It's about being curious, asking questions, and seeking out new perspectives. It's about finding joy in the small details and finding inspiration in the seemingly mundane.

As artists, we have the power to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary—to take the everyday moments of life and imbue them with meaning and significance. By cultivating a practice of mindful observation, we can unlock a world of endless inspiration and creativity, allowing us to create art that resonates deeply with ourselves and others.

So the next time you find yourself struggling to find inspiration, take a moment to pause, look around, and truly observe the world around you. You may be surprised at the beauty and wonder that awaits you, just waiting to be transformed into your next masterpiece.

Colour is one of the most powerful tools in an artist's arsenal, capable of evoking emotions, setting moods, and transforming ordinary scenes into extraordinary works of art.
In art, colour is much more than just a visual element — it is a language unto itself, capable of conveying complex ideas and emotions without the need for words. Each colour carries its own symbolism and cultural significance, influencing how we interpret and respond to the images we see. For example, the warmth of red can evoke feelings of passion and intensity, while the coolness of blue may inspire a sense of calm and tranquillity.

But the power of colour extends beyond mere aesthetics — it can also have a profound impact on our psychological and physiological well-being. Studies have shown that exposure to certain colours can affect our mood, energy levels, and even our appetite. For instance, the colour green is often associated with nature and growth, making it a popular choice for creating spaces that promote relaxation and renewal.

As artists, understanding the psychology of colour allows us to harness its power and use it to our advantage. Whether we are painting a landscape, composing a photograph, or designing a graphic, the strategic use of colour can enhance the impact of our work and create deeper connections with our audience.

In the end, colour is more than just a visual sensation — it is a dynamic force that shapes our experiences and enriches our lives in countless ways. So, the next time you find yourself immersed in a work of art, take a moment to appreciate the power of colour and the profound impact it has on our world.
